Does Digital Intergroup Contact Reduce Prejudice? A Meta-Analysis.

With the ubiquity of technology in the modern life, contact between different social groups via different digital means is an everyday reality. Can such a digital intergroup contact reduce prejudice, or does it exacerbate it? In this study, we summarize the present evidence on the links between intergroup digital contact and prejudice in a variety of intergroup contexts. We meta-analyzed experimental and correlational evidence from 88 independent samples (n = 9,385). Digital intergroup contact showed a small but significant effect consistent with prejudice reduction (g = 0.25). Direct digital contact showed larger effect than indirect forms of contact, and contact via computer-mediated communication showed larger effects than contact achieved via other activities such as interacting with nonplayable characters or embodiment. The effects were similar regardless of the type of out-group targeted by prejudice. Overall, meta-analytical results suggest that digital intergroup contact may reduce prejudice.

The paper focuses on the process of verbalization of human speech and mental activity within the framework of computer-mediated communication using the example of the editing history of comments posted on the Thomson Reuters news agency page on social networks. The aim of the study is to identify the cognitive and pragmatic characteristics of the step-by-step changes that the text of an Internet comment undergoes during the author’s editing. The work is novel in that it is the first to explore the process of verbal thought formulation on the basis of the authors’ editing history of Internet comments. In addition, the paper represents the first attempt to determine the functional and semantic potential of both the cognitive and pragmatic transformations and the corresponding linguistic means. The results showed that the functional and semantic potential of cognitive and pragmatic procedures and the corresponding linguistic means is aimed at verbalizing emotions, expressing attitudes towards new information, clarifying the modality and reference of language units, which indicates the transition of Internet communication from the oral and written register to the mental and written one.

Avatars and organizational knowledge sharing

We study how organizational knowledge sharing behavior is affected by avatar use during computer-mediated communication (CMC) with an unknown co-worker. Experimental results from two ethnically different samples provide theory-consistent evidence that outgroup discrimination—manifested as refusal to share knowledge—can get magnified in the ‘virtual world’ when avatars are used for self-representation. In supplemental analysis, we use eye-tracking data to provide preliminary evidence for behavioral differences—in terms of gaze fixation—when knowledge sharing requests accompanied by avatar profiles as opposed to photo profiles are processed and further explore how individuals' choice of using avatars vs. photographs for their online profile affects their co-workers' perception. Our study contributes to understanding cooperative organizational behavior in the virtual space. Managing cooperative organizational behavior in the virtual space is becoming increasingly important as digital work further penetrates contemporary work arrangements.

‘Black self-serve’: the depreciation of blackness and racialized vision among Taiwanese netizens

ABSTRACT While the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement was proliferating in the United States, the movement did not gain similar degrees of support in Taiwan. Instead, on social media there is even a term, ‘Black Self-serve,’ meaning that Black people always use race as an ‘excuse’ to demand whatever they want. Analyzing computer-mediated communication about blackness from the largest bulletin board system in Taiwan – PTT, this article highlights how and why Taiwanese netizens used the term ‘Black self-serve’ to accuse Black people of fighting for rights. Centering cultural processes of racialized vision and division, this article shows that the depreciation of blackness is deeply connected to Taiwanese navigation of its tenuous status along the racial hierarchy, sense of inferiority, colonization experience, cultural alienation, and the image of Black people as accomplices of anti-Asian racism – all are deeply embedded in systemic racism.

Meeting Effectiveness and Inclusiveness: Large-scale Measurement, Identification of Key Features, and Prediction in Real-world Remote Meetings

Workplace meetings are vital to organizational collaboration, yet relatively little progress has been made toward measuring meeting effectiveness and inclusiveness at scale. The recent rise in remote and hybrid meetings represents an opportunity to do so via computer-mediated communication (CMC) systems. Here, we share the results of an effective and inclusive meetings survey embedded within a CMC system in a diverse set of companies and organizations. We correlate the survey results with objective metrics available from the CMC system to identify the generalizable attributes that characterize perceived effectiveness and inclusiveness in meetings. Additionally, we explore a predictive model of meeting effectiveness and inclusiveness based solely on objective meeting attributes. Lastly, we show challenges and discuss solutions around the subjective measurement of meeting experiences. To our knowledge, this is the largest data-driven study conducted after the pandemic peak to measure, understand, and predict effectiveness and inclusiveness in real-world meetings at an organizational scale.

The Effect of Individual Traits on Emerging Roles in Synchronous Computer-Mediated Groups

This study examines group dynamics in a virtual decision-making context through the lens of role theory and speech act theory, furthering previous research on the roles that emerge in such settings. Specifically, this research uses communication transcripts and text analysis to complete two main research objectives. First, we extend prior research by exploring how individual traits of group members (specifically, personality, cognitive ability, and social sensitivity) are related to emerging roles in computer-mediated communication. Personal characteristics such as agreeableness, social sensitivity, and motivation were significant predictors of role emergence in online decision-making groups. Agreeableness predicted the emergence of the listener role, social sensitivity predicted the emergence of the manager role, and motivation predicted the emergence of the sharer role. Second, we answer the call for more replication research and further validate the results from previous research by measuring roles assumed by individuals working synchronously online; we highlight the findings that are confirmed across previous research and our current study.

A Decade of Social Media for Learning: A Systematic Review

Since the emergence of social media in the early 2000’s, innovative educators have sought ways to utilise, adapt, and maximise the opportunities for learning within social networking and collaborative online spaces. The purpose of this systematic review is to analyse the work published on social media for learning in the Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice (JUTLP) over the 20-year life of the journal to date. We summarise the current evidence on the use of social media for learning and document how the field has evolved and changed since its emergence as a pedagogical theme. We explore themes for the use of social media for learning, key challenges, how the use of social media has changed over time, and we look at specific types of papers that contribute to the original research on social media for learning. We achieved this through a systematic review 3-step process: 1) scoping and understanding the review context and research questions, 2) undertaking methods using an established approach for a systematic and quality assessment of the literature, and 3) undertaking a thorough thematic analysis of the empirical evidence from the systematic review papers to provide meaningful outcomes and recommendations. This robust approach resulted in the analysis of 11 papers and exploration of 4 key themes: Computer mediated communication, digital capabilities, and confidence, learning community, and social media pedagogy. Finally, we make recommendations that aim to benefit both editors and authors of JUTLP, and editors and authors more generally.

Bilingual Texting in the Age of Emoji: Spanish–English Code-Switching in SMS

Technology and computer-mediated communication (CMC) have quickly transformed the means of interaction among monolingual and bilingual individuals alike, especially in the younger generations. While e-mail once replaced traditional “snail mail”, today’s youth networks mainly via social media and short message services (SMS). Digital communication has thus become a fertile ground for sociolinguistic research. The present study aims to contribute to the field of “electronic” code-switching, specifically in the emerging area of text messaging. To this end, I analyze The Bilingual Youth Texts Corpus, a collection of text messages among urban emergent Spanish–English bilinguals in New York City. The main findings indicate that (1) although it is not the most common practice, participants do engage in code-switching when texting each other; (2) their language mixing obeys most of the socio-pragmatic and communicative patterns attested in oral production (such as emphasis, elaboration, lexical need and, especially, tag switches) along with other functions (textisms) which are idiosyncratic to CMC; and (3) the language choices made by these bilinguals reveal a linguistic and a cultural belonging to two worlds where they may and must use both languages to fully express themselves online just like in real life.

Chinese guanxi in computer-mediated communications (CMC): a scoping review of business and management studies

ABSTRACT Over the past several decades, Guanxi research has garnered considerable attention from business and management scholars, primarily focusing on traditional aspects. This scoping review aims to broaden this perspective by investigating the relationship between online Guanxi and computer-mediated communications (CMC) interactions within the business management domain. Analysing 67 studies from business and management journals spanning 2008 to 2024, we explore the role of CMC in facilitating the development of Chinese Guanxi and its impact on key business outcomes. Additionally, we synthesize key insights through tables and propose several promising avenues for future research in this area.

Exploring the relationship between teachers' beliefs and practices of oral corrective feedback in synchronous computer-mediated communication

This study investigated the relationship between the EFL teachers' beliefs about oralcorrective feedback (OCF) and their actual teaching practices in the context ofsynchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC). It aimed to understand theextent of in/consistency between the teachers’ OCF practices and beliefsregarding the significance of OCF, types of OCF strategies and the types of errorsreceiving OCF.Data were collected through two instruments: observations for thepurpose of exploring the teachers’ actual OCF practices and a questionnaire touncover OCF beliefs.It was found that the teachers expressed strong beliefsabout their awareness of the significance of OCF, which, however, was notreflected in the frequency of OCF provision. The results also indicated that recastswere the most frequently employed form of feedback, which is in line with the overallpreferences reported by the teachers in the questionnaire. . Additionally, the teachers consideredpronunciation errors the most significant target of OCF. Nevertheless, vocabulary errors had a substantially higher frequency of corrections. It was also noted that theteachers stated to adapt their OCF provision in SCMC contexts compared to F2Fclassroom settings. The observed in/consistencies were discussed considering theimpact of various belief systems on classroom behaviors and several contextual factors.

Experts vs. Peers: The Role of Situational Characteristics in Opinion Seeking on Electronic Networks of Practice

With advances in information and communication technologies (ICT), organizations of various forms now deploy an increasing number of ICT-enabled persuasive systems in several domains. Traditional computer-mediated communication (CMC) theories mainly focus on the effectiveness of media in the synchronous/asynchronous spectrum for effectively matching medium with communication task. The contemporary communication environment is rich with asynchronous channels such as email, Web, and text messaging, which makes it important to go beyond synchronicity and determine the nuances among various asynchronous channels. No rigorous research has compared the effectiveness of these channels in the persuasive systems domain where organizations use technology to persuade users to modify their behavior in a direction that they mutually agree to be desirable. In this paper, we study the effectiveness of CMC and the strategy used to frame the persuasive message. We explore persuasive strategies of praising, reminding, suggesting, and rewarding for health behavior and promotion. We model user experience as a mediator between channel strategy combinations and persuasive effectiveness. Through controlled user studies, we compared sixteen combinations of communication channel and persuasive strategy with or without emoticons. We found that channel/strategy combinations affect persuasive effectiveness (mediated by user experience) in varying degrees. Our findings contribute to the body of CMC and persuasive system knowledge and have practical implications for online advertising, health promotion, and persuasive technology design.

Association of emojis to the five basic tastes (sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami)

The increasing prevalence of computer-mediated communication has given rise to a pictogram known as emojis, offering an intuitive and informal means of conveying emojis and attitudes. This study aimed to establish a communication code linking basic tastes to emojis, as a way to facilitate the externalization of emotions. It explored how emojis correspond to basic tastes, focusing on consumers' perception of the umami taste through food emojis. An online survey involving 285 voluntvb bveers was performed. The questionnaire consisted of 42 questions, with 41 aimed at associating emojis with the five basic tastes; and one focused on associating food emojis with the umami taste. The results emphasized an inherent connection between certain emojis and basic tastes. Bitter and sour tastes were predominantly associated with emojis conveying negative feelings, while sweet and salty tastes were linked with positive emojis. Additionally, the umami taste was characterized by emojis expressing notions of something incredible, fascinating, impressive, or exciting. Respondents predominantly associated the following food emojis with the umami taste: cheese, instant noodles, bacon, popcorn, pizza, sushi, and red meat. This research delved into the connection between taste perception and emotional expression through emojis, demonstrating how these digital symbols effectively capture human taste expressions. The findings underscore a clear association between basic tastes and specific emojis, highlighting consumers' awareness of foods rich in umami taste. The results of this study indicate the potential of using non-verbal, digital and simplified communication for use in sensory analysis related to the perception of basic tastes.

Citizen journalism gatekeeping process: An evaluation of conceptual framework for computer mediated communication (CMC) hoax interactivity

<p>Compliance with the Journalistic Code of Ethics (KEJ) is very important and mandatory for journalistic workers. Nowadays, we often encounter journalistic works that are unethical and tend to be very unethical, thus making the connoisseurs of journalistic works uncomfortable with them. This phenomenon can be found on the New Media news portal which spreads various kinds of hoax information. Freedom in the use of New Media is one of the reasons why hoaxes usually appear in New Media, because those who inform news are not only from the journalist profession. While a journalist will pay attention to the Journalistic Code of Ethics (KEJ). In addition, there is no official institution that functions to control and supervise the dissemination of information in New Media. Unlike the case with the mass media which is always monitored by KPI as the Gatekeeper of broadcasting in Indonesia. So that it can filter out various information that is not worthy of appearing in the circulation of journalistic work connoisseurs. Therefore, those who play an important role in New Media to be able to filter all circulating information or in other words who become Gatekeepers are connoisseurs of journalistic work themselves. So that later journalistic connoisseurs will not be consumed by hoaxes and not spread hoaxes. So that the existence of this phenomenon makes researchers interested in studying it more deeply about it. This study uses qualitative methods, data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation, and the validity of the data using time and source triangulation.</p>

Is Social Media Use Related to Social Anxiety? A Meta-Analysis

ABSTRACT During face-to-face interactions, social anxiety involves an intense fear which precipitates impaired communication and avoidance. Social media provides an alternate, potentially less anxiety-provoking communication venue. The relationship between social anxiety and social media is unclear. Prior reviews focused on the relationship between one of these terms (i.e. social anxiety or social media use) and a broader category (i.e. psychological well-being, computer-mediated communication). These earlier reviews found inconclusive results perhaps due to the paucity of studies available that examined the specific relationship between social anxiety and social media use. Given an uptick in research on this specific relationship in the past five years, the current study synthesized and analyzed 27 independent study samples that met inclusion criteria (Total N = 38,163). Using a random-effects model, we found a significant positive relationship between social media use and social anxiety (r = .14). Moderation analyses indicated smaller positive effect sizes for studies with adolescent-only samples, White-majority samples, North American samples, and less reliable measures of social media use. Since social media may provide affordances and risks that depend on each mental health challenge, we need more social media usage studies and reviews with results specified by challenge.

Unveiling Engagement in Asynchronous Writing: A Comprehensive Exploration of Approaches and Indicators – A Systematic Literature Review

In developing the learners’ language competence, many educational institutions altered teachers to integrate computer-mediated communication (CMC) synchronously and asynchronously. However, the issue of engagement becomes another issue to be handled. Accordingly, in this literature review of 20 qualitative, 7 quantitative, and 8 mixed-method studies published in the high-ranked database from 2000-2021, we aim to examine the approaches to evaluate and indicators to facilitate the learners’ engagement, specifically on writing asynchronously. Asynchronous CMC became the concern of this study as it supports the learners to follow the simultaneous discussion and supports multiple learning styles. The reviewed studies were identified using behavior, cognition, and emotion approaches to evaluate the learners’ engagement. Thus, the types of indicators to facilitate the learners’ engagement are input, process, and outcomes. Finally, this review suggests it is useful to design writing courses that effectively conceptualize evaluation approaches and indicators to facilitate the learners’ engagement.

The implications of internet-based Chinese language courses on online classes.

Interactionist and social-cultural perspectives on second language acquisition suggest that interactions between teachers and students offer promising avenues for acquiring Chinese as a second language, which the vast majority of international students consider difficult. Computer-mediated communication is far safer than face-to-face encounters during the present pandemic. Three aims are being investigated here. It is important to first analyze the differences between traditional classroom and online learning by different modes, then analyze the various ways teachers use computer-mediated communication, and finally analyze the challenges and opportunities presented by online Chinese as a second language courses using qualitative research methods. Three teachers and 84 students are analyzed statistically in terms of their multimodal interactions, and the quality of their weekly classroom exchanges is assessed through an interpretive analysis of questionnaire data, all in the name of a mixed-methods approach. Particular attention was paid to the challenges of online tutoring for students, the discrepancy between instructor and student understandings, and the use of several teaching strategies with international students. The online classroom environment places unique demands on the quality of student-teacher communication. Different strategies must be used when teaching non-native speakers of Chinese as a second language compared to teaching in a traditional classroom setting.

Signaling outrage is a signal about the sender: moral perceptions of online flaming

Abstract Most flaming research addresses explanations for and the immediate effects of flaming on those engaging in and targeted by flaming. However, online interactions are increasingly visible, suggesting that understanding third-party evaluations of flaming is important. By integrating considerations in computer-mediated communication theorizing with the social-perceptual effects of online moral outrage, we explore how third-party observers evaluate flaming, also assessing beliefs about the signaling social function that flaming serves. In seven experiments (total N = 3,178), we manipulated the intentionality of triggering events and compared flaming to other types of online responses (less-toxic criticism; supportive), measuring reactions including moral regard, comment approval, and positive/negative engagement. Findings suggest that flaming may sometimes act as exculpable moral outrage when responding to egregious behaviors. However, contrary to participants’ beliefs, flaming does not reliably or persuasively influence perceptions of those whom it targets; rather, it mostly appears to send negative signals about the flamer.

Framing to Make an Argument: The Case of the Genocide Hashtag in the Russia-Ukraine war

AbstractThis study tackles hashtags as framing devices which shape public arguments and controversies in computer-mediated communication environments. It focuses on the use of the genocide hashtag on Twitter in the context of the Ukraine-Russia war. It proposes and showcases a methodology to surface how the semantic and discourse properties of the term genocide affect its framing properties as a hashtag which bears argumentative functions, directly or indirectly calling for action.

The public service information system is a variety of storage operations and management of communication information mechanisms from organizers to public addresses and vice versa as well as in direct word-of-mouth communication. The study in this research uses the theory of CMC (Computer Mediated Communication), as a format that is applied in the form of reading-based communication similar to document messages. The application method in community service is contained in the creation of the Cijengkol Village Website by utilizing the Wix platform as the basis for building the Cijengkol Village government Website with various stages associated with the Waterfall method. In addition, the initial phase of making this Website is by conducting discussions, creating details of the content, collecting databases, and designing the Website concept. The result of this research is that the Website has been handed over to the Cijengkol Village Government. This update can be seen from the profile photos of all village officials, surveys and documentation of some locations in Cijengkol Village, to ensure the completeness of administrative data. This handover is accompanied by knowledge transfer, especially to operators that will managing the Website.
